On Adults

Nowadays I’m what’s considered a “Young adult”, I do interact with many members of this strange species. These people aren’t any different than kids. They’re just pretending to be something they saw in people older than them. It’s quite funny when you pay attention to this.

Somebody finishes their university studies and they get a job. They get that first few months of being overwhelmed with giddiness and excitement. All the while, their life starts to allow them to wear this persona of the “adult”. Everyone has a different image of what that is but it’s always something about how you dress, how you talk and move. You can see what the picture looks like in their head very quickly after they get their first job or graduate or get married or whenver they think adulthood starts.

I see it very clearly in some people who are not very good at pretending. They just have this image of what a mature adult looks like, or even more: how the professional looks like. They come into meetings with a template that they try to follow. They try to laugh at certain things a certain way, they chose certain words, they embody this that they were persona. I wish I could describe it better. It’s very funny when you see the pretending.

I sometimes allow myself a little fun. I rock the boat. That’s obviously not part of the template. I see them panic. What does the professional do now? Oh boy. Some get mad, some freeze, some hand you the command. It’s fascinating. I wish I could stand outside of me for a moment and see myself tumbling at this. I don’t know what my own model for being an adult looks like because it’s in my own head. But I bet I’m funny too. Did I start to walk differently? Did I start to wear button up shirts and drink coffee? I don’t know, maybe. That’s fun 😄
