On Sudden departure

Sometime that night, the man goes out for a cigarette and never comes home. Nothing happened. No warning. No conflict. Out of the blue.
You read about this phenomenon a lot.
I now get it.
This man just inflicted immense harm on his family. It' the kind of thing that scars all members of the family for life. It's the kind of this that makes me think the least of a man. He betrayed his own, he let them down, and was not up for his most primitive task. Is this even a man?
And yet, I find in me no judgement towards him.
I get it.
I offer no justification for this crime. I have compassion for the man, but I'm not offering any. All I'm saying is that such unreasonable action comes from a certain psychological place that I now appreciate. Sometimes, the thing needs to stop.
I get it.
