# On the love of H8es

I don't mean to be too profane or harsh, but I've been wanting to make this point for a while: Mass lay-offs and rehiring are the corporate equivalent to Snoop Dogg's: "We don't love them h8es".

Don't get triggered, just consider it.

In respectful English, it means: We give people above market value because this is how we roll, and then we show them the door when we're done with them, and then we call them back when we want them again. It's just business.

Nobody encourages professional promiscuity as much as yours truly. I actually find it healthy. The workplace can be a big family, but it can also be an equally important, necessary, and ethical institution: a marketplace. It's where mature professionals exchange value and take responsibility for their own financial exposure.

Increased professional mobility turns us more and more into freelancers whether we want it or not. You can't go into this market with your 60's corporation mindset.

Big tech manhandling their workforce is despicable. They know that they project a false promise of security to their workforce which is comprised of whiney semi-adults who can't function without a keyboard. But we need to be accountable for our own actions. Yes, governments should perhaps do something, but our generation needs to stop treating our employers as parents.

Working at

? Enjoy 🍻.

Fired? No problem 💪🏻.

Offered to come back again? Hell yeah 🥳!

Rather work with folk who know your dog's name? Power to you 🎩.

That's maturity 101.

If this feels like an "Awkward spot" as

Insider

claims, then you really need to re-do your ethical math. Maybe we're accidentally prostituting ourselves.

We don't have to hide our opportunism. As long as we're honest, we don't make or imply false promises, and we make sure to give people more than their money's worth, we shouldn't feel any shame in looking out for our own interests. Nothing awkward about it.

Don't hide it. Say it with your chest:

"I am an engineering mercenary".

"I am a design Condottieri".

That, I respect. But none of this "Awkward spot" cr4p.

That's called prostitution.

Prostitution - noun:

The unworthy or corrupt use of one's talents for personal or financial gain.

Promiscuity- noun:

Demonstrating or implying an unselective approach; indiscriminate or casual.
